5\u00a0<\/sup>For though I am absent in the flesh, yet I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your good order and the steadfastness of your faith in Christ.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

6\u00a0<\/sup>As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

7\u00a0<\/sup>rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

8\u00a0<\/sup>Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n

beguile (v.4) \u2014 deceive by false reasoning<\/h3>\n

enticing words (v.4) \u2014 speech adapted to persuade<\/h3>\n

order (v.5) \u2014 a military term, used for disciplined soldiers<\/h3>\n

in the spirit (v.5) \u2014 Paul’s spirit<\/h3>\n

steadfastness (v.5) \u2014 a military term for a solid front<\/h3>\n

Paul was in prison when he wrote Colossians, chained to Roman soldiers at all times. No doubt that, in part, explains why he used so many military terms.<\/h3>\n

as … so (v.6) \u2014 by faith, and with the same doctrine<\/h3>\n

received (v.6) = received by instruction \u2014 the doctrines they were taught regarding Christ<\/h3>\n

Christ Jesus the Lord (v.6) \u2014 should be “the Christ Jesus the Lord” \u2014 His person, not just the gospel<\/h3>\n

rooted (v.7) \u2014 tense indicates a “once-for-all” experience<\/h3>\n

built-up (v.7) \u2014 tense indicates an ongoing process<\/h3>\n

in Him (v.7) \u2014 not upon<\/span> Him \u2014 He is the sphere within which the building occurs (Ephesians 2:20<\/span><\/a>).<\/h3>\n

established (v.7) = being made firm \u2014 tense indicates an ongoing process<\/h3>\n

abounding (v.7) \u2014 overflowing<\/h3>\n

spoil (v.8) \u2014 another military term \u2014 taking a captive in war for slavery<\/h3>\n

philosophy (v.8) = love of wisdom \u2014 speculations, particularly about God<\/h3>\n

vain (v.8) = empty, futile, to no purpose<\/h3>\n
