{"id":1993,"date":"2012-03-03T05:00:41","date_gmt":"2012-03-03T11:00:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1993"},"modified":"2022-03-03T09:14:56","modified_gmt":"2022-03-03T15:14:56","slug":"acts-269-12-%e2%80%94-pauls-persecution-of-chrisitans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1993","title":{"rendered":"Acts 26:9-12 \u2014 Paul&#8217;s Persecution of Christians"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup id=\"en-NKJV-27829\">9<\/sup> \u201cIndeed, I myself thought I must do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup id=\"en-NKJV-27830\">10<\/sup> This I also did in Jerusalem, and many of the saints I shut up in prison, having received authority from the chief priests; and when they were put to death, I cast my vote against them .<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup id=\"en-NKJV-27831\">11<\/sup> And I punished them often in every synagogue and compelled them to blaspheme; and being exceedingly enraged against them, I persecuted them even to foreign cities.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup id=\"en-NKJV-27832\">12<\/sup> \u201cWhile thus occupied, as I journeyed to Damascus with authority and commission from the chief priests,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>Paul sincerely thought he was doing right in opposing Jesus Christ (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=856\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">John 16:2<\/span><\/a>). He was probably the head of the Jewish persecution of Christians.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Paul&#8217;s sincerity did not excuse him, though it did afford God grounds for showing him mercy (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=3424\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1 Timothy 1:13<\/span><\/a>). \u2014 Stam, page 129.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>to do (v.9) = to do habitually<\/h3>\n<h3>to the name (v.9) \u2014 &#8220;to the cause of&#8221; \u2014 &#8220;to things done in the authority of&#8221;<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">I cast my vote (v.10) \u2014 The word &#8220;vote&#8221; means, literally, the stone or pebble with which the vote was recorded. If the expression be taken quite literally, it will mean that Saul was a member of the Sanhedrin before his conversion, and, as such, gave his vote like the other Sanhedrists. This view is strongly advocated by some, and has much to be said in its favor. In that case, we should have to suppose that he was elected to that important body because of his prominence as a Jewish propagandist; as also, apparently, that he had been previously married \u2014 a qualification required in members of the Sanhedrin \u2014 though subsequently becoming a widower (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=2283\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1 Corinthians 7:7<\/span><\/a>).
