{"id":1805,"date":"2012-08-13T05:00:29","date_gmt":"2012-08-13T11:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1805"},"modified":"2023-06-07T15:53:03","modified_gmt":"2023-06-07T21:53:03","slug":"hebrews-111-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1805","title":{"rendered":"Hebrews 11:1-3"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup id=\"en-NKJV-30170\">1<\/sup> Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup id=\"en-NKJV-30171\">2<\/sup> For by it the elders obtained a good testimony.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup id=\"en-NKJV-30172\">3<\/sup> By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>substance (v.1) = foundation, the ground on which one builds hope, assurance \u2014 of future hopes \u2014 Faith makes our hope a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">fact<\/span>, not just an expectation.<\/h3>\n<h3>evidence (v.1) = proof which results in conviction \u2014 of present realities \u2014 Faith proves that unseen things exist.<\/h3>\n<h3>Faith gives us assurance of things to come and confidence in our present circumstances \u2014 because it&#8217;s based on the Word of God \u2014 whereas our own senses can betray us, God never will.<\/h3>\n<h3>Verse one isn&#8217;t a definition of faith but a statement of its working.<\/h3>\n<h3>elders (v.2) \u2014 those referred to in the rest of the chapter<\/h3>\n<h3>good testimony (v.2) = &#8220;bore witness to&#8221; \u2014 God bore them witness that their faith gave the victory over obstacles.<\/h3>\n<h3>understand (v.3) = discern<\/h3>\n<h3>worlds (v.3) \u2014 the physical world <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">in time<\/span> \u2014 time and space<\/h3>\n<h3>framed (v.3) = made fit, prepared<\/h3>\n<h3>word (v.3) = utterance (<em>rhema<\/em>) as opposed to &#8220;<em>logos<\/em>&#8221; which is inward will expressed \u2014 refers to the utterance of God, not the Son of God<\/h3>\n<h3>Faith is taking God at His word. Nobody was here to witness creation but we know how it happened (v.3) because God told us.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">There is still an unseen force that does not submit itself to experimental science, and this is the object of faith. \u2014 Wuest, page 196.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>The individuals listed in Hebrews 11 span all the dispensations between Conscience and Law (Human Government and Promise).<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">A study of the Gospels discloses the fact that the Judaism of the first century was not the supernatural system given by God whereby the sinner was given a salvation in answer to his faith in the Offering for sin which God would some day set forth, the animal sacrifice he offered being an outward testimony of his inward faith in the Sacrifice it symbolized. The Judaism of that day was an ethical cult. It taught salvation by works. The sacrifices were a mere form on the altars of Judaism.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">It was therefore necessary for the writer to prove to this Jew that salvation was by faith, not works. He does this in 11:1-12:2, basing his proof on the Old Testament Scriptures this Jew professed to believe. He first defines faith (11:1-3). Then he illustrates the efficacy of faith by using examples of First Testament saints (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1807\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">11:4-40<\/span><\/a>).
