{"id":1377,"date":"2011-06-25T05:00:37","date_gmt":"2011-06-25T11:00:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1377"},"modified":"2022-02-05T09:52:55","modified_gmt":"2022-02-05T15:52:55","slug":"acts-517-24","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1377","title":{"rendered":"Acts 5:17-24"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">17 Then the high priest rose up, and all those who were with him (which is the sect of the Sadducees), and they were filled with indignation, <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">18 and laid their hands on the apostles and put them in the common prison.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">19 But at night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out, and said,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">20 &#8220;Go, stand in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this life.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">21 And when they heard that, they entered the temple early in the morning and taught. But the high priest and those with him came and called the council together, with all the elders of the children of Israel, and sent to the prison to have them brought. <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">22 But when the officers came and did not find them in the prison, they returned and reported,<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">23 saying, &#8220;Indeed we found the prison shut securely, and the guards standing outside before the doors; but when we opened them, we found no one inside!&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">24 Now when the high priest, the captain of the temple, and the chief priests heard these things, they wondered what the outcome would be.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>The apostles were arrested and treated as criminals as a result of their healing of the crowd. The Sadducees denied the resurrection and would lose their authority and influence if the people believed in the resurrection of Jesus Christ.<\/h3>\n<h3>high priest (v.17) \u2014 Annas or Caiaphas<\/h3>\n<h3>all those who were with him (v.17) \u2014 his party, the Sadducees<\/h3>\n<h3>sect (v.17) = religious party<\/h3>\n<h3>indignation (v.17) = jealousy (at their loss of authority)\u2014 meaning includes envy and zeal<\/h3>\n<h3>apostles (v.18) \u2014 probably all 12 of them this time<\/h3>\n<h3>common prison (v.18) \u2014 public ward\u2014 an ignominious treatment<\/h3>\n<h3>angel (v.19) \u2014 the Sadducees denied the existence of angels.
