{"id":1217,"date":"2011-04-02T05:00:29","date_gmt":"2011-04-02T11:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1217"},"modified":"2023-01-28T08:11:24","modified_gmt":"2023-01-28T14:11:24","slug":"philippians-414-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1217","title":{"rendered":"Philippians 4:14-19"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">14 Nevertheless you have done well that you shared in my distress. <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">15 Now you Philippians know also that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church shared with me concerning giving and receiving but you only. <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">16 For even in Thessalonica you sent aid once and again for my necessities. <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">17 Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that abounds to your account. <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">18 Indeed I have all and abound. I am full, having received from Epaphroditus the things sent from you, a sweet-smelling aroma, an acceptable sacrifice, well pleasing to God. <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">19 And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>you have done well (v.14) \u2014 you have done a beautiful thing<\/h3>\n<h3>shared (v.14) \u2014 have fellowship with \u2014 The Philippians made Paul&#8217;s hardship their own.<\/h3>\n<h3>beginning of the gospel (v.15) \u2014 When Paul first taught them his gospel<\/h3>\n<h3>Macedonia (v.15) \u2014 about 10\u00a0 years before this letter (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1672\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Acts 17:1-15<\/span><\/a>)<\/h3>\n<h3>concerning (v.15) = on the score of, to the account of<\/h3>\n<h3>Thessalonica (v.16) \u2014 about 92 miles from Philippi on the Via Egnatia. Paul did not take anything from the church in Thessalonica, but worked as a tentmaker.<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>For you remember, brethren, our labor and toil; for laboring night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you, we preached to you the gospel of God (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4184\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1 Thessalonians 2:9<\/span><\/a>).<\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><em>Nor did we eat anyone&#8217;s bread free of charge, but worked with labor and toil night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=6209\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">2 Thessalonians 3:8<\/span><\/a>).<\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>not that I seek the gift (v.17) \u2014 Paul wanted to make sure the Philippians understood why he was talking about money.<\/h3>\n<h3>fruit (v.17) \u2014 spiritual fruit<\/h3>\n<h3>your account (v.17) \u2014 with the idea of earning (spiritual) interest<\/h3>\n<h3>I have all (v.18) = I have in full<\/h3>\n<h3>sweet-smelling aroma (v.18) \u2014 their gift is acceptable to God, like the odor of the Old Testament peace offering<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Paul acknowledges that he was more than <em>content <\/em>with what he had received from the assembly. And he wanted them to be aware that their thoughtfulness and generosity had touched the heart of God. Their gifts were &#8220;an odor of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable.&#8221; The apostle borrows this particular phraseology from the Old Testament. There were five Levitical offerings that were practiced under the Mosaic system, three of which were sweet-smelling savor offerings.
