{"id":1212,"date":"2011-03-27T05:00:54","date_gmt":"2011-03-27T11:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1212"},"modified":"2023-01-27T12:44:55","modified_gmt":"2023-01-27T18:44:55","slug":"philippians-48-9","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1212","title":{"rendered":"Philippians 4:8-9"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">9 Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>finally, brethren (v.8) \u2014 as in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1184\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">3:1<\/span><\/a>, not &#8220;the last&#8221; but, &#8220;for the rest&#8221;<\/h3>\n<h3>brethren (v.8) \u2014 a term of affection<\/h3>\n<h3>true (v.8) \u2014 in contrast to lies, but also genuine, sincere, simple<\/h3>\n<h3>honest (v.8) = honorable \u2014 things that claim respect<\/h3>\n<h3>just (v.8) = being right \u2014 between man and man and man and God<\/h3>\n<h3>pure (v.8) = free from corruption \u2014 stainless, unsullied<\/h3>\n<h3>lovely (v.8) = agreeable \u2014 produces a sense of love because of its purity, beauty or holiness \u2014 endearing<\/h3>\n<h3>good report (v.8) = well-sounding, attractive, winning, gracious \u2014 not &#8220;well spoken of&#8221;<\/h3>\n<h3>virtue (v.8) \u2014 moral excellence in the estimation of God<\/h3>\n<h3>praise (v.8) \u2014 praiseworthy<\/h3>\n<h3>think (v.8) \u2014 make these things the subject of thoughtful consideration \u2014 carefully reflect on them and let them shape your conduct<\/h3>\n<h3>learned and received (v.9) \u2014 from Paul&#8217;s teaching<\/h3>\n<h3>do (v.9) \u2014 practice, habitually carry out<\/h3>\n<h3>peace (v.9) \u2014 &#8220;shalom&#8221; = wholeness<\/h3>\n<h3>All Christians have peace <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">with<\/span> God, but we only experience the peace <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">of<\/span> God when we walk in Him.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The word &#8220;if&#8221; refers to a fulfilled condition. The word &#8220;virtue&#8221; in the Greek text was used in classical Greek for any mental excellence, moral quality, or physical power. Paul studiously avoids it. Only here does he use it. It seems that the apostle includes it in order that he may not omit any possible ground of appeal.
