{"id":1204,"date":"2011-03-15T05:00:38","date_gmt":"2011-03-15T11:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1204"},"modified":"2023-01-25T07:01:42","modified_gmt":"2023-01-25T13:01:42","slug":"philippians-320-21","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1204","title":{"rendered":"Philippians 3:20-21"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">20 For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">21 who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself. <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">our<\/span> citizenship (v.20) \u2014 strong emphasis on &#8220;our&#8221;<\/h3>\n<h3>citizenship (v.20) = the condition or life of a citizen, a noun \u2014 same word as conduct (verb) in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1149\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Philippians 1:27<\/span><\/a>.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The stability and security of the citizen under Roman law filled the thoughts of the time with high conceptions of citizenship and its value. Philippi, being a Roman colony, and its citizens therefore Roman citizens, thought in terms of citizenship. Paul seizes this fact as a good opportunity to illustrate to the saints their heavenly citizenship with its privileges and responsibilities. What a contrast between those mentioned in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1202\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">3:18-19<\/span><\/a>, who were citizens of this earth, and those spoken of in 3:20-21, who are citizens of heaven! \u2014 Wuest, page 102.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>our citizenship <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">is<\/span> (v.20) = exists \u2014 a present reality, being, a fixed location<\/h3>\n<h3>heaven (v.20) \u2014 plural in Greek \u2014 all the heavenly regions contrasted with earth<\/h3>\n<h3>from which (v.20) \u2014 heaven (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=4157\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1 Thessalonians 1:10<\/span><\/a>)<\/h3>\n<h3>wait = expect eagerly<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">The word &#8220;look&#8221; [wait] is the translation of a Greek word made up of three words put together, the word, &#8220;to receive,&#8221; which speaks of a welcoming or appropriating reception such as is tendered to a friend who comes to visit one; the word &#8220;off,&#8221; speaking here of the withdrawal of one&#8217;s attention from other objects, and the word &#8220;out,&#8221; used here in a perfective sense which intensifies the already existing meaning of the word.
