{"id":1109,"date":"2010-12-21T05:00:02","date_gmt":"2010-12-21T11:00:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1109"},"modified":"2022-12-02T07:49:00","modified_gmt":"2022-12-02T13:49:00","slug":"galatians-614-18","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1109","title":{"rendered":"Galatians 6:14-18"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup id=\"en-NKJV-29199\">14<\/sup> But God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup id=\"en-NKJV-29200\">15<\/sup> For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but a new creation.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup id=\"en-NKJV-29201\">16<\/sup> And as many as walk according to this rule, peace and mercy be upon them, and upon the Israel of God. <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup id=\"en-NKJV-29202\">17<\/sup> From now on let no one trouble me, for I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus. <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><sup id=\"en-NKJV-29203\">18<\/sup> Brethren, the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>God forbid (v.14) \u2014 &#8220;far be it from me&#8221; with the emphasis on <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">me<\/span>. The Judaizers might preach law to save themselves from persecution, but Paul won&#8217;t.<\/h3>\n<h3>boast (v.14) = exult<\/h3>\n<h3>cross (v.14) \u2014 in contrast with those referred to in <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1107\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">verse 12<\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<h3>world (v.14) \u2014 ceremonies and rites \u2014 the characteristics of the world that appeal to men<\/h3>\n<h3>crucified (v.14) \u2014 accursed (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1030\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Galatians 3:13<\/span><\/a>) \u2014 There can be no compromise between the believer and the world.<\/h3>\n<h3>The <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">act<\/span> of circumcision (v.15) affects only the outward man.<\/h3>\n<h3>new creation (v.15) \u2014 new in quality, different in character<\/h3>\n<h3>walk (v.16) \u2014 order one&#8217;s conduct<\/h3>\n<h3>rule (v.16) = measuring rod, standard, principle. In this case, those who walk by the principle of verses 14-15.<\/h3>\n<h3>mercy (v.16) = outward manifestation of pity \u2014 assumes need on the part of the recipient and adequate resources on the part of the giver<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Israel of God (v.16) \u2014 When he adds &#8220;And upon the Israel of God,&#8221; he does not indicate a second class of believers; he is indicating all who put their trust in Christ. They are the true &#8220;Israel&#8221;; they are the spiritual descendants of Abraham and of Jacob. The very word is in itself a rebuke to the Galatian heresy. Those converts were being tempted to believe that the true &#8220;heirs of the promise&#8221; were the Christians who might also adopt the Mosaic ritual. Paul insists that the true spiritual Israel consists of those who glory in the cross and in the power of the risen Christ. \u2014 Erdman, page 126.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>Erdman&#8217;s view is the popular one, and it may be the right one. But I think Paul may, in fact, be referring to two groups of believers \u2014 those who walk by grace through faith, as he does on the one hand, and, on the other hand, those kingdom Jews in Judea who were still believing in the immediate return of the Messiah but were <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">not<\/span> pressuring the Gentiles to live by the law.<\/h3>\n<h3>trouble (v.17) \u2014 embarrass by distracting attention or disturbing rest (here). Paul has rested his case against the Judaizers; let them bother him no more.<\/h3>\n<h3>for <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">I<\/span> bear (v.17) \u2014 emphatic &#8220;I&#8221; \u2014 Paul himself \u2014 not applicable to all believers<\/h3>\n<h3>bear (v.17) \u2014 as a banner \u2014 with pride<\/h3>\n<h3>marks (v.17) \u2014 branding scars. Paul&#8217;s evidence of his sufferings for preaching the gospel \u2014 contrasted with the Judaizers&#8217; meaningless circumcision<\/h3>\n<h3>Brethren (v.18) \u2014 not used at the start of the letter.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">A final delicate touch is found in the last word of his petition. It is the word &#8220;brethren.&#8221; A reader may at times supposed that Paul&#8217;s severity had made him forget the true relation which he sustained to his disciples in Galatia. This last syllable indicates that the apostle does not think of them last of all even as his pupils and followers. He reminds them that they and he are all one in Christ Jesus, heirs of the same promise, recipients of the same grace.
