{"id":1057,"date":"2010-10-31T05:00:45","date_gmt":"2010-10-31T11:00:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1057"},"modified":"2022-11-20T13:25:13","modified_gmt":"2022-11-20T19:25:13","slug":"galatians-48-10","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1057","title":{"rendered":"Galatians 4:8-10"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">8 But then, indeed, when you did not know God, you served those which by nature are not gods.<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">9 But now after you have known God, or rather are known by God, how is it that you turn again to the weak and beggarly elements, to which you desire again to be in bondage?<\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">10 You observe days and months and seasons and years. <\/span><\/em><\/h3>\n<h3>then (v.8) \u2014 before they trusted Christ<\/h3>\n<h3>did not know (v.8) \u2014 hadn&#8217;t grasped the fact, unknowing<\/h3>\n<h3>nature (v.8) \u2014 belongs by virtue of origin, essential character<\/h3>\n<h3>not gods (v.8) \u2014 idols, demons, men, anything worshiped which was not God and could not possibly be a god<\/h3>\n<h3>now (v.9) \u2014 since salvation<\/h3>\n<h3>known God (v.9) \u2014 know Christ (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=830\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">John 14:8-10<\/span><\/a>), trust<\/h3>\n<h3>known by God (v.9) \u2014 acknowledged by God, personal relationship with Him. We know God only by His finding of us. It isn&#8217;t by our effort. Salvation is all of God.<\/h3>\n<h3>how is it that you turn again (v.9) \u2014 How does it come about that you are turning? How is it possible? Question of wonder. After being rescued from paganism and being in a personal relationship with full access to God, how is it possible that they could want to return to powerless bondage to the law?<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">In this respect the heathen religions, so far as they added anything of their own to that sense of dependence upon God which is innate in man and which they could not entirely crush (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1566\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Acts 14:17<\/span><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=1705\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">17:23, 27-28<\/span><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=253\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Romans 1:19-20<\/span><\/a>), were wholly bad; they were profligate and soul-destroying, were the prompting of devils. On the contrary, in the Mosaic law, the spiritual element was most truly divine. But this does not enter into our reckoning here, for Christianity has appropriated all that was spiritual in its predecessor. The Mosaic dispensation was a foreshadowing, a germ of the gospel: and thus, when Christ came, its spiritual element was of necessity extinguished or rather absorbed by its successor. Deprived of this, it was a mere mass of lifeless ordinances, differing only in degree, not in kind, from any other ritualistic system. \u2014 Wuest, page 121.<\/span><\/h3>\n<h3>weak (v.9) \u2014 powerless to produce results<\/h3>\n<h3>beggarly (v.9) \u2014 powerless to enrich, poverty-stricken<\/h3>\n<h3>elements (v.9) = rudiments, inefficient and incompetent for meeting needs (<a href=\"https:\/\/versebyverse.carpelibra.org\/?p=279\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Romans 3:19-20<\/span><\/a>)<\/h3>\n<h3>again to be in bondage (v.9) \u2014 to enter into bondage, about to happen, this time to the law instead of to idols.<\/h3>\n<h3>Paul&#8217;s point isn&#8217;t that the Galatians were returning to the law. They weren&#8217;t under it before. But by turning to the law, they were returning to a weak and beggarly system that was as ineffective as their old idolatry.<\/h3>\n<h3>observe (v.10) \u2014 for their own profits<\/h3>\n<h3>days (v.10) \u2014 sabbaths; months \u2014 new moons; seasons \u2014 feasts; years \u2014\u00a0 years of sabbath and jubilee.
